Guidelines for applicants
Objectives of the Program
The Queensland Program for Japanese Language Education was established by The University of Queensland and Griffith University with an endowment from The Tokyo Foundation to promote Japanese language education in Queensland and the Northern Territory. One of the major components of this Program is the provision of professional development opportunities for practising Japanese language teachers to further enhance their language skills.
Eligibility
Applicants must be full-time or part-time (0.4 or greater) teachers of Japanese language in government or non-government primary or secondary schools in Queensland or the Northern Territory at the time of application and have a soundly-based expectation of continuing employment in that field. Applicants must be non-native speakers of Japanese (i.e., have received the majority of their education outside Japan) and be Australian citizens or permanent residents.
Grant Details
Professional development grants are available in 2025, and it is expected that study will be completed by 30 September 2026.
Grant Program Description
Successful applicants will receive up to $2,500 towards the cost of tuition fees and related costs to undertake an approved language course at an Australian university (e.g. summer semester courses) or online (e.g. Japan Foundation, Sydney course). The aim of these grants is to assist teachers in upgrading their language skills. Applicants must be full-time or part-time (at least 0.4) teachers of the Japanese language at the primary or secondary school level in Queensland
Budgeting
It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that they provide a clear and detailed budget. The selection committee will not provide funding above the level requested, and it reserves the right to delete or reduce proposed budget items not considered essential to applicants’ study plans.
Certificate of Completion
All successful applicants will also be required to provide a certificate of completion, including the course level and number of hours of instruction, from the course provider on completion of the course.
Financial Statement
They will also be required to submit a breakdown of their expenditure to the Queensland Program for Japanese Education (QPJE), in addition to any requirements of their employer.

Applicants are responsible for making their own arrangements for their study program.

Notification of Successful Applicants
Successful applicants will be notified in late September 2025. Names and school addresses of successful applicants will be provided to The Tokyo Foundation for their records.
Selection Criteria
- The extent to which the proposed program meets the needs of the individual teacher.
- The extent to which the proposed program could be expected to enhance the applicant’s effectiveness as a Japanese language teacher.
- The extent to which the proposed budget is clear and reasonable.
- The extent to which anticipated outcomes could be expected to be achieved through the proposed course of study.
