The QCJLS is calling for applications for research and materials development projects to be carried out during 2025/26. Funding will be provided for applicants to produce either curriculum materials or original research outcomes such as journal articles and conference papers on any aspect of Japanese language education or Japanese studies education. Aspects of the research that will be considered for funding include research assistance, teaching release and other research costs. Conference travel will not be funded under this scheme.
Applications are being called for from all Queensland universities where Japanese language and Japanese studies are taught. It is expected that up to 2 grants will be offered in 2025, and that the funding provided will be in the $4-5,000 range. As the amount of funding available is limited, it is anticipated that in many cases projects will already be under way and this grant will be used to either bring them to completion or extend their scope. Because the total amount of funding is limited, curriculum development proposals in particular should demonstrate the relevance of the proposed project outcomes beyond only a particular course or university.
Grants will be awarded on the basis of the applicant’s ability to provide succinct statements of the central issue to be addressed by the project, the significance of and rationale for the project, and the proposed methodology and time frame. Particular attention should be paid to the project summary, in particular the clarity of the central research question and its significance, in addition to the strength, feasibility and relevance of the proposed method. A statement of the contribution the project is expected to make to Japanese language/studies education more generally in Queensland/NT; a fully justified budget; a summary of expected publication outcomes; and a brief CV must also be provided.
Selection Criteria
- Quality and significance of project (clear aim & methodology; significance & originality of project)
- Feasibility of project (timeline; budget)
- Relevance to Japanese language/studies
- Applicant’s track record and capacity for research (research opportunities; evidence of past performance)
If an application is a resubmission of an earlier project proposal, it should be substantially different from the original application. Successful applicants are not eligible to apply for the same grant program in the following year.
If the proposed project requires ethical clearance, an approval letter must be attached. If it is still under consideration, applicants should indicate when the outcome is expected to be available.
